What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a purified substance used in aesthetic medicine to temporarily relax certain facial muscles responsible for expression lines. It acts in a targeted, gentle, and precise manner, preserving the naturalness of expressions while offering a rested and rejuvenated face. The objective is not to freeze, but to enhance a relaxed and always expressive face.

How does Botulinum Toxin work?

Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the release of a neurotransmitter (acetylcholine), which prevents muscle contraction. It smooths expression lines, prevents their formation, and relaxes features while maintaining the natural harmony of the face.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main side effects?

Side effects remain infrequent, temporary, and generally mild:

  • small redness or slight bruising at injection sites
  • temporary feeling of tightness
  • mild headaches
  • more rarely, transient asymmetry, ptosis, or slight muscle weakness.

These manifestations usually disappear within a few hours or a few days.

The goal is to relax and limit the activity of facial muscles to maintain a natural expression, but a partial reduction in mobility is part of the treatment.

Botox can be considered around Montreux from the first expression lines, generally around 30 to 35 years of age. The effect is also preventive as it reduces the muscle strength responsible for wrinkles and slows their appearance while maintaining a natural look.

The main contraindications include:

  • pregnancy,
  • an infection or irritation in the treated area,
  • neuromuscular diseases (such as myasthenia),
  • a known allergy to a product component (rare).

On average, the treatment is renewed 2 to 3 times per year. Over time, some muscles relax permanently, which can allow for longer intervals between sessions.

Botox is not dosed in syringes, but in units. Depending on the depth of the wrinkles, the strength of the muscles, the area concerned, and the desired result, typically between 1 and 5 units are used per point.

Example: the frown line usually requires between 12 and 20 units.
